At home with Catherine & Margot
Paintings, books, ceramics—and a whippet with a good view of everything.

Catherine’s sitting room has filled up gradually. A floral print hangs near a small still life; books fill the shelves and ceramics sit on the cabinet. She has bought paintings over the years, choosing things she enjoys having around her. Margot, her whippet, usually observes the room from a woven bed near the fireplace.

For Margot’s portrait, Catherine chose a photograph taken from the sofa. Her front paws hung over the edge of the bed, her ears were folded, and her head was turned toward Catherine. It was a pose she knew well.

She wanted that slightly serious expression kept in the painting. Margot could look elegant without making much effort, and rather unimpressed with whatever was happening around her.

The composition kept her long forelegs and resting posture, with a simple cushion and less detail in the background. Above the cabinet, the portrait now sits among Catherine’s smaller pictures. Its dark frame has a fine gilt edge that brings a little warmth to the wall.

Margot’s bed remains by the fireplace. From the sofa, Catherine has a view of both.
